Boxee Box "Good Not Great Yet"

This review is from: Boxee Box by D-Link
Boxee Box is, in many ways, a refreshing new step in the ever expanding realm of media streamers. While some focus almost exclusively on online content, and others focus on locally stored media, the Boxee Box tries to blend the best of both worlds and, in most cases, succeeds.

For local content, this thing will play anything you can throw at it. 1080p, HD-audio, subtitles, no problems. I can't stress enough how good this unit is at playing video stored on a local hard drive or on your network.

For online content, I'm giving it a score of "Incomplete" frankly because it is. Netflix and Hulu+ are both on their way but not integrated into the device yet. Vudu, while supposedly available at launch time, isn't ready either. So, what you're left with is a bunch of smaller independent streaming options, most of which work fine, but the content available is pretty limited. I'm fully confident in the Boxee team getting these apps, and hopefully more (come on Amazon VOD!!!), up and running in the very near future.

The remote control, while ingenius in many ways, needs some tweaks. It's impossible to see the letters on the qwerty keyboard side in the dark, forcing you to awkwardly stumble through trying to type anything on it. You can hook up keyboards (either wired or wireless) via the USB ports on the box, which can help, but it'd be nice to see some improvements to the included keyboard on the remote. All signs from the Boxee team point to an improved remote control being released at some point down the road, which is good.

All in all, it's a really nice product that competes and even beats other options like Google TV in a number of ways. I'm very happy with my purchase despite it's current flaws and bugs because I'm confident that the Boxee team will keep improving what is already a solid product.
